Small Town in Connecticut Angry About Sex Crimes
A couple months ago a man who was previously convicted of sex crimes was accused of raping a 13-year-old child in a public park and city Councilor Frank Nicastro now wants to take more serious action. Nicastro has requested that registered sex offenders be completely banned from ever entering city parks."We have to take a strong stand here," Nicastro mentioned. A unanimous decision was made by the other members of the city council to send the proposal to the Ordinance Committee.
Art Ward, the mayor of Bristol, said, "Our parks should be considered safe havens for the youth of our city." A similar law in Danbury, a nearby town, states that it "prohibits child sex offenders who are required to register in this state from being present in any child safety zone."
A child safety zone is defined as "a public park, playground, recreation center, bathing beach, swimming or wading pool, or sports field or facility and surrounding land," according to a report from the Office of Legislative Research.
In the city of Bristol there are currently ninety-seven registered sex offenders, but the majority of them were convicted of offenses that do not have children involved.
