What are Crime Photos

crime photosQuestion, who knows what, happens when a crime is committed and what the crime scene investigators do? Yes, they get their gloves on and inspect for evidence and take crime photos. Those crime photos are very important to them so they can look back on it for solving the answer.

Not only is it very important, they need to take pictures where everything was in place or else it messes up their final solution to the mystery. These crime photos can range from a lot of things but are mostly used in murder scenes or just mainly in death related crime scenes.

Historic Crime Photos And The Stories They Bring

crime photosI recently checked out a great article at the website for NPR that discusses how Los Angeles crime photographers in recent years have uncovered some interesting photos that are from several decades ago. In 2002, LAPD photographers discovered some old negatives that dated back to the 1920's and beyond, and some very significant people were seen pictured in them. Apparently, several of the crime photos have been submitted to various art galleries in the United States. To see the article, visit www.npr.org/programs/morning/features/2002/sept/lapd_photos. From shots of mob-related murders to controversial photos of female police officers, this collection is certainly a great discovery in the history of police photography.

A New Way to Look At Crime Photos

crime photosIf you search the Internet for photos of crime scenes, you will notice that most of the results you are given contain photos of dead bodies. I was having some trouble finding photos of other types of crimes, like vandalism and burglary. However, during my search I did come across something that is even more interesting than your average crime photos.

There is a computer software program available right now called Crime Scene Virtual Tour, which is a virtual reality program designed to give you "first-hand" perspectives of various types of crime scenes. CSVT apparently is a training tool that provides 3-dimensional reconstructions of crime scenes. It also simulates the process of investigating and collecting evidence, and if I am not mistaken, all objects in the game are provided with actual 3-D measurements. For more information, visit www.crime-scene-vr.com and be sure to check out some of their sample images.

Huge Library of Crime Photos

crime photosI found a pretty useful website in terms of viewing crime photos, and visitors have two options. You can either view the photos for free at their website, or choose to buy large print versions of them. I am assuming that most of you will just view the free photos at their website, which is absolutely fine. A lot of these pictures are from different police and fire departments in the U.S., and there are even some photos taken by emergency medical technicians.

The photos that can be viewed/purchased at this website are of various crime scenes, detective cases, DEA investigations, SWAT situations, Bomb Squad situations, firefighting, auto extrications, emergency medical calls and much more. The photos are also of very high quality, and I believe that when you purchase them you can download them directly to your computer.

To check out this excellent resource visit www.onscenephotos.com. If you want to get some visual displays of various crime scenarios then this is a great place to look. If you do check out these photographs, try to pay attention to detail rather than just glancing at them. There are a lot of things to consider when dealing with a crime scene, no matter what the situation is.

Interested in Taking Crime Photos?

crime photosThere are so many different skills that can be useful in law enforcement, and being a crime scene photographer is certainly one of them. Although one might assume that taking photos of evidence is as simple as pressing a button on a camera, this is not true at all. Taking crime photos requires skill and discipline, in addition to being an officer of the law.

There is a great website that provides some of the basic information that is needed to be an effective and useful crime scene photographer. For example, taking crime scene photos requires a certain type of emphasis. Knowing how to manually set your camera in order to emphasize various aspects of the crime scene is probably one of the most important things. There are also some important steps that must be taken when submitting the evidence to court.

This website, which is located at http://www.rcmp-learning.org/docs/ecdd1004.htm is a great resource, but it is not a substitute for institutionalized training. Always remember that hands-on training and experience are the best ways to learn.
