The general public is typically unaware of the many health and safety issues at a crime scene. These dangers can be categorized into bio-hazards, physical hazards, and chemical hazards.

Common dangers to officers, crime scene investigators, and bystanders include blood-borne diseases, noxious vapors or gases, explosives, UV lights and lasers, and harmful chemicals used in investigative procedures.

Every police department must have procedures and policies governing the management of crime scene hazards. Proper protocol requires that law enforcement authorities survey the scene for potential dangers before beginning the investigation.
